MTB TRAIL SYMPOSIUM - SILVERSTAR, BC SEPT 2022

Mark Wood, Principal at Trail Holistics, was invited to the MTB BC Trail Symposium held at SilverStar in September 2022 to present on Risk Management in Recreation as well as participate in a Risk Management panel with other industry professionals including John Hawkins from Rec Sites & Trails BC, Sandy Millnar from Equa Specialty Risk Partners Corporation and Rachela Pollock Capri CMW.

JORDIE LUNN MEMORIAL BIKE PARK & gravity zone

Trail Holistics was hired by the City of Langford to create a comprehensive Safety Strategy for one of the most innovative and progressive bike parks in the world. Consisting of a skills park, multiple jump lines from beginner to pro, and two Velo Solutions pump tracks connected by a high speed ‘snake run’. Constructed in a forested setting, the park is surrounded by a cyclocross trail circuit. Due to the advanced nature of the features and the interplay of these assets, the site required a dynamic complexity of risk management strategies to ensure the park provided adequate progression for all levels of rider while upholding public safety. Working with Red Bull builders and athletes to provide design input, it has been and continues to be a tremendously exciting project to be part of as the City of Langford continues to expand trails within the park. For more about the Jordie Lunn Bike Park, check out their website HERE.

NATIONAL ROUNDTABLE ON RISK MANAGEMENT

Mark Wood, Principal at Trail Holistics, took part in a National Roundtable on Risk Management held in Feb 2022.

As a guest presenter, Mark delivered a presentation “Risk Management on Recreational Trails” to summarize the Occupiers Liability Act, legal precedence and the key components of a robust Risk Management strategy including the ethos to enable progressive and challenging trails to answer the social needs of communities.

amtb guidelines

In 2021, we released a second edition of our aMTB guidelines for Explorer bikes, in partnership with Tara Llanes Industries. If you are pursuing the development of aMTB trails in your community, be sure to download our guidelines HERE. Thanks to BETA MTB for carrying the story in their magazine HERE and PINKBIKE for issuing a press release HERE. Our guidelines have been used worldwide to build gravity fuelled aMTB trails and our original release provided the foundation for organizations like KASA to create their aMTB classification standards.

trail workshops - sunshine coast

Our work continues with community trail associations throughout BC. Delivering annual workshops on the Sunshine Coast, we are proud to work with the Sunshine Coast Trail Society to support their efforts to plan, develop and manage a sustainable trail network.

The Level I workshop culminates with a work project where participants are able to put theory into practice, developing the critical thinking to make decisions in the field, driven by a knowledge based approach that is part science, part art. Here’s a link to a workshop delivered in 2020, followed by a return visit in 2021.
